Putting Old Barns Back to Work

A great deal of expertise and effort goes into reclaiming old wood. Our wood buyers concentrate their efforts on finding reclaimed lumber we transform into antique, old wood flooring that is the finest available. The rich glow and aged patina of the wood is unmatched.

The structures we find are checked for the condition of the wood and age before any dismantling takes place. Finding quality structures is the first and most important step in making reclaimed flooring. Many structures were built in the early to late 1800's. Barns in particular were built using the surrounding trees. As a result, each barn has a variation of the species of wood used in its construction. Every piece of wood reclaimed from these structures is full of history. We would love to tell you a story or two about some of the things we have found.

The wood from the dismantled structure is then brought to our milling plant. Every board is hand inspected for quality. The wood is passed through a metal detector to remove any metal that is imbedded. It is amazing what one finds in the wood; from nails to shanks and even shotgun blasts. From denailing the boards are stacked and put into the kilns for drying. Beams are sawn into flooring stock and then kiln dried. Nails, insects and weathering are just some of the variables that make up the uniqueness of Olde Wood products.

All of our reclaimed wide plank floors are kiln dried to 6-8% moisture content to ensure stable flooring that can be used even over radiant heat floors. This critical step of kiln drying makes the floor stable and prevents movement after installation. After drying, the boards are milled to precise specifications. The boards are once again hand inspected before shipping. The effort we use in preparing the wood that will be used on your floor gives us the ability to have confidence that we are providing you the best of reclaimed wood available anywhere. Each floor is as unique as your fingerprint. There are no two floors alike.
