Have any “most memorable” or interesting/ funny stories about a particular barn? Perhaps a fascinating history or a dismantle that went all sorts of wrong?
We once dismantled a barn which was previously owned by a family member of Robert "Steamboat” Fulton in which we found lots of really neat old artifacts from the early 1900's.
We also dismantled a factory building in Pennsylvania and found record books written in old English manuscript dating back to the mid-1800's, which was really exciting. We still have those books today and it's interesting to go through them every now and then and wonder what it was like to live in that time.
Do you only do residential installations?
Olde Wood products work well in any type of installation, residential or commercial.
Other than flooring what other services does Olde Wood provide? Cabinetry, furniture, rails, etc?
Flooring is our specialty, however we also supply the materials for cabinetry, furniture, trim work, stair components, tables, doors and pretty much anything else that can be crafted from wood.
What’s the cost of your wide plank flooring?
The starting price point per square foot of our antique wide plank flooring runs from $9 - $15 and is prices based on many variables (plank width, thickness, wood species, etc.).
What other structures, other than barns, do you salvage wood from?
Besides barns, our wood may come from log cabins, factory buildings, churches, old school houses, etc.
Regarding the dismantling process how exactly do you undertake such a project and how long does it take?
The dismantle process can take a few days to several weeks to complete, depending on the size of the barn and the weather. Basically we go in and remove every salvageable piece of the structure, from the roof to the basement. These pieces are then de-nailed, stacked, sorted, and custom cut to the flooring specifications which were ordered.
What does kiln drying do to the wood? Why is it important to the process?
Kiln drying our lumber is an extremely important step in the processing. It accomplishes two very important things, 1) It brings the moisture content of the flooring to about 6% to 8% which provides for a more stable floor and will not have excessive expansion or contraction; and 2) It eliminates any insect infestation which may be present in wood of this age (although this is very rare).
What kind of protective finishes do you recommend for the wood?
We recommend a simple tung oil finish for our flooring, which really brings out the character in the grain pattern of the flooring as well as the color. Of course it’s really up to the client's discretion.
Is there anything in particular customers should know about the upkeep of antique wood?
Maintaining antique flooring is very simple, regular vacuuming and a deep cleaning now and then will give your floor years of beauty. A simple cleaning solution of warm water and regular Dawn dish soap is really all you need for deep cleaning.
Other than recycling wood, does Olde Wood do anything else ‘green’ in manufacturing or processing?
Besides our flooring products, we also have a large and ever-growing selection of antique barnstone, antique slate, antique hand hewn timbers and antique brick.
Which species are most common in old barns?
Oak, but it really depends on where you’re at in the country. However, southeastern Ohio and Pennsylvania are predominantly oak.
Is there a demand for a certain kind of wood that you can’t meet?
Not really. However American Chestnut is the most difficult to locate, as it stopped growing in the early 1900’s because of blight. It can only be found in barns and log homes that were built using it.
Does the wood need any processing (sanding, staining, etc.) other than kiln drying before it is ready to be used as flooring?
After installation, the planks need to be sanded and finished.
Does Olde Wood do the install? If not, does the installation of the barn wood require any special expertise?
Olde Wood does not do installations. We use qualified outside installers who are trained and familiar with antique, wide plank products.
